Whenever we’re in a phase of life where we need some downtime or are going through a stressful transition, there are times we need to self-regulate as a means of being able to support our own needs.
The more we can do this, we can trust in our ability to meet our own needs and generally live a life where we feel we are supported by ourselves.
Below I’ve listed some of the common challenges we have with our day-to-day emotions, and how we can immediately utilize tangible tools and steps to feel better instantly.
1 - Overthinking
An incredible habit most successful individuals begin and finish their day with is journalling for 6 minutes. If you struggle to meditate or find you struggle to fit this in, even a few moments of journalling can completely clear your mind acting as another method of both observing and attaching from your thoughts, allowing you to take more action towards achieving the things you desire in life.
2 - Anger
Whenever we feel feelings of anger, a pause is always needed. Anger means a previous trigger or underlying need for safety in that moment feels unmet. This could be emotionally, financially or physically. Take a pause, remove yourself from the situation you are in, and take a few moments to pause and be with the emotion as you allow yourself to accept it and move forward.
3 - Resentful
Empathy and Compassion are the antidotes for feelings of resentment. Life moves so quickly with expectations of us that we can feel resentful as though life feels out of our control. Once we practice compassion and empathy for another it brings us closer to the feeling of love and understanding. The more we allow ourselves to feel this, we receive the medicine of feeling the unbound potential we have within us as we are always responsible for taking ownership of our lives.
4 - Sad
When we are seeking connection with others, it makes us feel sad as we are grieving the loss of connection. An easy way to overcome these feelings is connecting and reaching out to a loved one. This connection is the fabric of human beings and often in our pursuits if we don’t meet this need we can go through periods of feeling numb, grief, and emptyness.
5 - Restlessness
Going for a walk attaches us to detach from our emotions, challenges, and tasks. It allows us to be physically present with our bodies, get fresh our into our system, and breathe life back into our lives. Whenever you’re feeling as though you need to move some energy, a walk can completely open you up to instantly feeling better.
6 - Overwhelmed
Life is busy and most of us have so many tasks to juggle on a day-to-day basis. If you have an overarching plan, a time frame, and some goals set out of things you are looking to achieve, the best thing you can do is grab a notebook, write the most important things to do down, focus on one thing at a time, and cross each one off as you go along.
7- Burned out
Have you been getting enough sleep and allowing yourself to rest enough? If you’re struggling for time, even consciously setting the intention with yourself that for the next hour, you are going to rest sends a signal to your mind, body, and spirit that it’s ok for your nervous system to relax.
This way, an hour of focused rejuvenation sends a message to your system and you will feel even more rested. You can also do this by incorporating healthy sleep habits such as essential oils and prioritizing your needs by going to bed an hour earlier.
8- Anxious
There are aspects of life in our control, and out of our control. When we allow ourselves to focus on today, the positive aspects, and what we can do and focus on now, we completely alleviate the tension of the upcoming event we’re worried about or that project at work. Focussing on the now means we get to enjoy today, make the most of it, and feel feelings of hope and optimism along the way.
Emotions are important signals and the more we can connect with our feelings and emotions and understand they serve us, the more we get better at meeting our own needs. This makes us feel safe, loved, and supported by ourselves generally allowing us to enjoy life a lot more.
I hope these 8 Steps serve you well.
